Wellmore Behavioral Health

Simplifying a Non-Profit Brochure

Role: Volunteer Visual Designer

July - September 2018

“[Jilian] graciously offered to work with Wellmore to modernize our core marketing tool, making it interactive and more concise. She was very patient with us as each round of edits required approval from our directors, which lengthened the process considerably due to the dramatic change that was long overdue. Jilian was creative, friendly, and timely, making her very easy to work with. We would highly recommend Jilian for any graphic design projects that require a complete overhaul.”

— Allison Separy, former Marketing Assistant at Wellmore

How it started

Wellmore Behavioral Health is one of the largest behavioral health and substance use treatment providers in Connecticut. Its small-but-savvy marketing team was looking for ways to save money.

They decided to eliminate their design agency expenses and requested a volunteer to update its 20-page brochure. At the same time, a colleague told me about her volunteer work, and I was inspired to give back. And, I’ll admit it—working with the same brand day in and day out—I was in the mood to stretch my design wings and do something different. While scrolling for projects, I saw Wellmore’s request. Mental health is near to my heart—and my head! So many reasons to say yes… Challenge accepted.

the design brief

The Wellmore marketing team and I video-chatted our way to a mutual understanding of needs.

  • The target audience: both patients and physicians.

  • The brochure was nomadic. It stayed in environments like doctors’ offices and busy event spaces.

  • The design needed to be in brand—fonts, colors, and logos were received.

  • The team requested more images of ethnically diverse families.

  • Personal insight: Both doctors and patients are overwhelmed and need information in a simple, easy-to-digest format. Aaaand I wasn’t about to update a 20-page brochure when all the information already lived on their website. ☺️

the result

The final design is a flexible, portable, easy-to-digest brochure/poster 🦄

  • The 20-page brochure became a 17"x17" half-fold to tri-fold design.

  • The tri-folded version fits brochure holders in doctors’ offices. It also travels better.

  • Copy was gutted to the essentials. I highlighted more patient stories for a warmer feel, which focused on the results patients experienced with Wellmore. The Wellmore marketing team focused on collaborating with their directors to agree to the content cuts. Thank you!

  • The flat version—as the Wellmore team pointed out—could double as a poster.

  • I sourced free images of diverse families to keep costs low and relatability high.

  • Fewer pages meant the brochure was more approachable AND easier to update in the future.

  • After several rounds of edits were finalized, the Wellmore team brought the design to their board. Approved!

My take on the Wellmore Behavioral Health project

It was clear that this brochure needed down-sizing and I am grateful to the Wellmore team for being open to the big change.
